Help Us Help You: Keep Fire Hydrants Clear of Snow ❄️🚒
Winter weather can create dangerous conditions during emergencies—especially when fire hydrants are buried or blocked by snow.
The North Bellmore Fire Department reminds residents and business owners that fire hydrants must remain clear and accessible at all times. When firefighters respond to a fire, every second matters. A hydrant that’s hidden by snow can delay critical firefighting operations and put lives and property at risk.
How You Can Help
After a snowfall, please take a few extra minutes to help by:
• Clearing at least 3 feet of space around all sides of the hydrant
• Shoveling a clear path from the street to the hydrant
• Making sure the hydrant is visible from the roadway
No special equipment is needed—just a shovel and a little extra time.
Why It’s Important
Firefighters often operate in poor visibility, extreme cold, and stressful conditions. A clear hydrant allows crews to connect to a water supply quickly and begin firefighting operations without delay.
See a Hydrant That’s Buried?
If you notice a hydrant that is completely blocked and you’re unable to clear it yourself, please notify the North Bellmore Fire Department so we can address it as soon as possible.
Thank you for doing your part to help keep our community safe this winter. A small action—like clearing snow from a hydrant—can make a life-saving difference.
Stay safe and warm,
